What is Delta9 (D9)?

The 2018 Farm Bill allowed hemp-derived products to be legally sold throughout the United States. This allowed for a flood of product development and no shortage of market confusion.

Hemp and cannabis plants both grow a large variety of cannabinoids. What makes a plant classified as ‘hemp‘ is how much THC (delta 9) is available on a dry weight basis. For a plant to be federally legal and used as hemp, it must contain less than .3% THC (delta 9). In contrast, most ‘cannabis‘ plants have a THC (delta 9) potency ranging from 15-25%.

Now that we understand that both hemp and cannabis plants can grow THC (delta 9), just in different %, let’s tackle the name.

Why do people get confused about delta 9 (THC)?

Delta 9 is the naturally occurring ‘good stuff’ that people think of when they enjoy consuming cannabis. A lot of the confusion is due to the marketplace in which the classification is being introduced and the products that have come before it.

In a world of hemp-derived flowers, vapes, and edibles, there’s a lack of standardized expectations and regulations to govern the market. This has created inconsistencies and trust issues.

Before seeing Delta 9 (THC) products introduced to the marketplace, a flood of less potent (synthetically derived) Delta 8, the majority of experiences had with these products were underwhelming, and consumers reverted back to wanting the ‘good stuff.’

General consumers are grouping Delta 8 and Delta 9 together in the hemp space, due to a lack of education, consistency, and trust. It’s our job to hold high standards in testing, awareness, and product experience, whether we are operating inside a regulated market or introducing products in the hemp world.
